Hrvatsko zagorje is a hilly natural-geographical unit in the northwestern part of Croatia, with a total area of about 2,000 km2. The pilot area is located in the northwestern part of Hrvatsko zagorje, in Varaždin County, in the eastern part of the Bednja Municipality and the central part of the City of Lepoglava. The pilot area covers a total of nine settlements, three in the City of Lepoglava and six in the Bednja Municipality.

Landslides in this area mainly occur in weathered clastic rocks and soils of Miocene age and at the boundary of the superficial material and the bedrock. Landslides are mostly small to medium, with sliding surfaces at depths of several meters to a maximum of 20 m.

Part of the City of Lepoglava and the Bednja Municipality was selected as a pilot area of hilly relief and low degree of urbanization in NW Croatia, built of Neogene and Quaternary deposits extremely susceptible to landslides. The size of the pilot area is 20 km2, which corresponds to the production of landslide inventory maps, landslide susceptibility maps and recommendations for application in the spatial planning sector at the local level.
