Environmental impact
Environmental impact
LandSlidePlan will help to increase scientific research of landslide for the purpose of its prevention. This implies generation of new ideas and solutions environmental threats, landslides, as well as for development of measures for adaption to climate changes.
Societal implications
Societal implications
Dissemination, communication and exploitation activities of the LandSlidePlan Project will influence awareness and knowledge on landslide risk prevention methods and solutions in society, primarily through the public authorities.
Creating new knowledge with the ultimate goal of society benefit.
LandSlidePlan will create new knowledge in the field of landslide science using the innovative LiDAR technology to develop new landslide hazard mapping services for application in the spatial planning, from decision making processes to land-use planning policies in relation to environment. Since the new knowledges are related to the Earth Observations (EO) and to the creation of new EO products with the aim of avoiding landslide hazards, the ultimate goal is to mitigate landslide damage, i.e. to reduce potential human, material, economic, social and other losses.
According to the strategy “Smart specialisation strategy of the Republic of Croatia for the period from 2016 to 2020” new knowledges belong to the priority area 5.2.2. Energy and sustainable environment, in part related to STPA 2 Environmental friendly technologies, equipment and advanced materials (i.e. challenges related to climate change and increased natural hazards which inspire research initiatives, encouraged by the government measures and industry stakeholders). Related to the same strategy, LandSlidePlan also contributes to the increased use of EO products and environmental application services, better management of environmental resources (space), increased quality of life and faster economic development of areas with landslides. The project will also develop new knowledge on creating landslide maps for decision making and managing sustainable development processes
Creating scientific research groups that can be competitive on an international level
LandSlidePlan will link researchers from two Croatian universities with researchers from Italy and Slovenia who have a great experience in landslide risk reduction. The significance of this research topic is confirmed by the UN strategic document “Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030”. The three international researchers in the project are prominent scientists with internationally recognized achievements which can be seen from their significant roles in international societies (International Consortium on Landslides and European Federation of Geologist). Two Croatian group leaders are also significant members in International Consortium on Landslides.
LandSlidePlan will generate a recognizable research group dealing with an internationally and nationally significant issue in the domain of landslide risk reduction. New research group of Croatian scientists from the two universities, together with scientists from Italy and Slovenia can be competitive at the international level due to excellence of the researchers and the potential of the LandSlidePlan project.
Creating scientists who can be supervisors to the new generation of young researchers
Development of Croatian scientific-research potential
The project involves three young PhD researchers who will be involved in the application of innovative EO and GIS technologies to create new products with intention to reduce geohazard problems. It is therefore considered that successful implementation of the project through the implementation of advanced research activities will create supervisors of the new generation of young researchers.
LandSlidePlan contributes to the development of Croatian scientific research potential by acquiring and applying new knowledges in the project, publishing scientific papers in high-quality journals, and bringing scientific excellence worldwide by developing a new research methodology.
Policy and regulations
LandSlidePlan will help decision makers to better understand tools and methodologies for analysing different elements of landslide hazard and risk as well as its practical use in disaster risk management. Support decision-making with interaction between policy makers and the scientific community. Improved competences of policymakers, decision-maker and authorities from local, regional and national governments will influence improvement of policies and regulations.
Societal implications
Dissemination, communication and exploitation activities of the LandSlidePlan Project will influence awareness and knowledge on landslide risk prevention methods and solutions in society, primarily through the public authorities. Cooperation of governmental authorities with the LandSlidePlan and transfer of this information through different media can positively influence trust in public authorities (e.g., MGIPU). The practical measures disseminated to the public will empower also citizens in being better informed and community-supported
