The Istrian peninsula is a geomorphological unit separated from the interior by the limestone mountains of the Ćićarija Mt. Istria is geomorphologically composed of hilly northern edge (White Istria), lower flysch hills (Gray Istria) and low limestone plateaus (Red Istria).

The pilot area is located in the northern part of the Istrian County, in Gray Istria, and includes the hilly part of the City of Buzet between the valley of the river Mirna in the north and the accumulation Butoniga in the south. Part of the City of Buzet was selected as a pilot area of hilly relief and medium degree of urbanization in the part of Istria built of Eocene flysch deposits extremely susceptible to landslides. The size of the pilot area is 20 km2, which corresponds to the production of landslide inventory maps, landslide susceptibility maps and recommendations for application in the spatial planning sector at the local level.
